ABSTRACT
We have developed a problem-solving-based learning model for Physics. This model was developed by using R & D method covering 4-D steps, i.e., define, design, develop and disseminate. The problem-solving-based learning model, which has been proved to be successful to develop learning phases, including: first, orienting students on the problem; second, organizing students for the study; third, guiding investigation both individually and group, next, developing and presenting the results of the research; and finally, reflecting and reinforcing. The participants of the research comprised 25 physics education students at one of the universities in Medan in the 2010/2011 academic year. The design of the research was Pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The data of students’ metacognitive ability were collected by means of an essay test while the data of conceptual understanding were collected by using multiple-choice tests. The data were then analyzed using normalized gain scores,
